The Norwegian director Bent Hamers latest flick from 2007 is a magnificent art house gem and in my opinion the best Norwegian movie in years. The movie follows the retired train driver Odd Horten (played by Bård Owe) while he phlegmatically drives through life without any clue whatsoever. The storyline is backed up by a warm and familiar visual narration, unforthcoming dialouge and dry subtle humor. (Oh, and Odd is a common boys name and does not mean strange in Norway).
Also, download John Erik Kaadas fantastic "O'Horten theme"/"Hardangervidda", regardless if you watch the movie or not

A new movie about Ernesto Guevara "Che", is soon out in theaters, and I just saw the trailer on Youtube:

this is so wrong in many ways; why does he bring in all these terrible hollywood elements (the heroic music, the excessive action effects, the lack of a fairminded approach) to a movie like this? I think Benicio Del Toro is a excellent choice, but so wrong directior. I'm afraid Soderbergh can't justify Che. Well, this is just the impression I got from the trailer. I will still watch this on DVD, and hope he proves me wrong

India 1938: Chuyia is a nine year old who recently became a widow. According to the strict hindu rules of Manu, you're not permitted to re-marry, thus continue your life in an endless grief. Not going further into the plot, it's about forbidden love, betrayal, religion and all that jazz. In other words the same old story.

Nevertheless, it's perfectly executed in all ways: the acting is exeptional, the scenes are beautiful cinematograpic-wise, and the continuity is perfect. The whole movie gives you a poignant aftertaste. You should watch it if you take any interest in India, for the sake of education or entertainment.

Being very controversal in India/Pakistan (because of the rules are still valid) Mehta had to wait almost a decade to finish the movie. It's the final movie in Deepa Mehtas triologi: Earth, Fire and Water; all about women and different aspects and taboos of the Indian society.

David Fincher is adapting Charles Burns' brilliant Black Hole to the silver screen. WHY?! The guy is quite overrated and he's by all means the wrong director (it's not a psychological thriller ffs). If Black Hole were to be adapted, it should be in the Marjane Satrapi way. We just can't imagine Black Hole as a movie

woohooo !

these are our top 5 scandinavian movies from the 90s and 2000s:

1) Adams Æpler/Adams Apples - You might expect another boring danish drama (like I did) but this is an excellent pitch black comedy. If you find stuff like cancer, nazis and child rape funny you might not be very sane but director and writer Anders Thomas Jensen makes this funny and moving in a sick but clever way. Reccomended to people who don't take movies too serious.

2) Insomnia -
The only norwegian movie I acctualy like..I have really nothing more to say, except that if you like psychological thrillers you should see the original ! (And not the awful Hollywood remake)

3) Voksne Mennesker/Dark Horse -
A young deadbeat, his overweight friend who works at a sleep clinic, a beautiful girl on mushrooms, and an insomniac judge - the main characters of this quirky danish movie. It's perfectly shot in black and white, and directed by icelandic Dagur Kári. Watch this if you like peculiar/cute/absurd comedies about pretty much nothing.

4) Tilsammans/Together -
A swedish movie taking place in a community in 1975, where it's okay to be gay, communist or naming you kid after the Tet offensive.

Göran: You could say that we are like porridge. First we're like small oat flakes - small, dry, fragile, alone. But then we're cooked with the other oat flakes and become soft. We join so that one flake can't be told apart from another. We're almost dissolved. Together we become a big porridge that's warm, tasty, and nutritious and yes, quite beautiful, too. So we are no longer small and isolated but we have become warm, soft, and joined together. Part of something bigger than ourselves. Sometimes life feels like an enormous porridge, don't you think? Sorry, I'm standing around dreaming.

5) Populärmusik från Vittula -
Matti is bored by the village life, and Nila get's beaten by his father every day. Matti longs after the first fuck, and Nila tries to fight his dead grandmother. This is a weird movie with surrealistic elements in a totally realistic story. If like movies about music, friendship, magical transvestites, finnish people, penis shaped thumps and the struggle for finding your true self, this definitly is the movie for you. If you just like movies you should probably see it too.

La double vie de Véronique

The Double Life of Véronique (1991) is a French/Polish movie directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski and co-written by himself and Krzysztof Piesiewicz.

The film follows two women unaware of eachothers existence, though subtlety connected in some level. They share names, looks and passion for music; and accidentaly their lifes also crosses.

Themes like metaphysics, ambiguosity and deja vu are perfectly combined with magnificent camerawork and music to create an atmospheric and dare I say, philosophical, movie (how pretentious does this sound?). Still, the movie should be seen for its individual rendered and beautifully scenes. The cinematographer Slawomir Idziak uses filters to create outstanding lights and colours; and the music by Zbigniew Preisner is great... The acting is lovely - Irène Jacob does a decent job as Véronique/Veronika, she has quite a dreamlike and sublime presence, which fits the movie perfectly.

I would reccomend La Double Vie de Véronique if you appriciate movies like Science of Sleep, Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain and Me and You and Everyone We Know

Funny Games US

God knows how much we've been looking forward to this. We've already written about it several times, and finally; here comes the actual review:

I have no idea wether you want the film compared with the original, or if you simply want it reviewed as an own movie. The last one is kind of hard, since the movie is, except for the language, which almost excactly like the original. I have little negative to say about this, except for Brady Corbet who seemed to have studied the original Peter's every move. He was excactly the same, and frankly, that bugged me alittle. The kid on the other hand was actually extremely talanted, and made a certain "cat in the bag" scene so powerful it made my body twitch in agony and excitement, all at once. Talking about scare-factor I have a hard time figuring out if the original is simply scarier, if I didn't get scared because I've already seen it or if I didn't get scared because they don't talk german (well you have to admit, everything get's scarier when it's in a language you don't understand). I also had a hard time finding Michael Pitt creepy in the beginning, but after a while I just had to accept the fact that Pitt had interpreted the role in his own way, which actually worked magnificaly. The only thing I really missed in his performance was the Arno Frisch-way of saying "Ciao bella".

This is my favorite line, and even though I try my best not let that come in the way of me absolutely adoring this remake, it kinda does. I've been trying to justifie Pitt's bored and apathic "ciao bella...", but I just can't forgive him. Talking about performances it's needless for me to say that Tim Roth was brilliant. Even layed down on the floor, screaming, I never once thought of the wounded cop in Reservoir Dogs. To shake off the image of Naomi Watts in The Ring on the other hand, was harder. This has absolutely nothing to do with the lady's performance, but my general opinion of her. I was first able to overcome this judgemental image when she started crying. The woman knows how to cry.

I hope this review is helpful for even you who haven't seen the original, but either way I strongly advice you to see it. And if you have no idea what this film is about I will inform you of this:

If you want blood, gore and bigbreasted women, go see Doomsday, but if you're looking for a movie which will make you cry and shit your pants at the same time (and like me, would want a good ol' piece of art at the same time) this is the movie.

Badalamenti is mainly associated with David Lynch and have in addition to TP, made the soundtracks to Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. He also has a fantastic cameo-role as the mafioso Castigliani in the espresso scene in the latter movie. It may be a bombastic statement to say that David Lynch' movies wouldn't be that good without his music, but well...it's probably true.

Clockwork Orange

The title song Music for the funeral of Queen Mary composed by Henry Purcell and synthesized by Wendy/Walter Carlos is extremely funky. The rest of the soundtrack is an eclectic mix of classical music and synth tunes who perfectly complements the picture.

It's also worth mentioning the opening scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the epic Strauss composition. It seems like Kubrick really knew how to pick the right soundtrack to make an iconic opening scene.

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Wes Anderson always puts together good sountracks, and his choices ranges from the Stones to Eliott Smith.

The original soundtrack, made by Mark Mothersbaug, is perfect for any movie where Bill Murray fights against pirates in a speedo. Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op is probably among my five top songs ever. Seu Jorge, who plays Pelé Dos Santos, also makes a contribution with the acoustic portugese versions of David Bowie songs - priceless.

Who'd ya gonna call?

So me and some friends had been planning to see the remake of Funny Games, and friday the glorious day had finally arrived. We had already bought tickets a couple of days in advance so we were assured to get great seats, and waited quite tense and overly-excited. But then, for some cruel reason the theatre didn't have a film to actually show us. It's an understatement when I say we were crushed.
The day ended in refunds and free movie tickets to Be Kind, Rewind, which was kind of a dissapointment and not what we expected from Mr. Gondry. Too sentimental, not funny and the story line was kinda weak. And some bitch was screaming behind us every time Jack Blacks face showed up. Luckily Mos Def saved the movie from total disaster. Plus for using my favourite quote from Ghostbusters: We're gonna show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown

Conclusion: We hate Norwegian movie theatres... And Jack Black.

Since Otar Left

The director, Julie Bertuccelli - a former documentarist, debuted in 2003 with the georgian/french movie "Since Otar Left". It's a beautiful portray about three generations of women living together, depicted in a down-to-earth and humoristic way.
Otar has left Georgia and the misery, to work illegaly in France, while his mother Eka lives on his regular letters and phonecalls. Suddenly Otar dies, the letters stop, and the two younger generations doesn’t have the heart to tell Eka, so they conceal the truth by writing fictional letters.

You may think this sound like a boring and dull plot, but it surprised me with it’s charm, beautiful character descriptions and everydaylife details. The most pleasant surprise was Esther Gorintin who plays Otars mother Eka with so much life, tacitunity and strength. A solid movie I absolutley would reccomend !

The Ugliest Hairdos

Watchmen

Pia is not looking forward to the film remake of Watchmen.
The guy directing it is the same lame-o, Zack Snyder, behind 300 (never watched it, and never will) and Dawn Of The Dead. Can it get any worse?
Oh, yes! it's not enought to perhaps ruin the all time iconic graphic novel by letting a dumbass directing it, but one of the writers, David Hayter, wrote the X-Men, the sequel AND The Scorpion King! I can't belive it!

The cast is a chapter for itself. Only a guy that would cast Gerard Butler as a spartan warrior is capable of miscasting actors this... bad. For starters; how can Billy Crudup play Dr. Manhattan!?! And it get's worse if I have to watch "The Heartbrake Kid's Malin Akerman as Laurie Juspeczyk and this looser Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the one and only Comedian himself.
I'm getting used to the idea of Patrick Wilson as Dan Dreiberg, with the image of a little belly action. I hope they're not trying to make the new Nite Owl fit and in shape, he's supposed to squeese the old suite on. I guess Matthew Goode will make an ok Ozymandias, don't really know, don't really care...
The one arrangement I'm happy with is the casting of Jackie EarleHaley as Rorschach. I have no idea what this man may do, but I'm sure I'll love it.

We loved Ben Stiller in Zoolander and The Royal Tenenbaums, but he is directing/writing a new movie about "a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie who are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying". Can be interesting, but probably not since Tom Cruise AND Jack Black are starring too.. but the poster is pretty nice

Funny Games U.S.

This is the remake of the German 1997 version of Funny Games, but it's not really a remake. Or is it?
The psychological thriller is directed and written by Michael Haneke in both the 1997 and 2007 version. The remake is starring Tim Roth, Naomi Watts, Michael Pitt, Brady Corbet and Devon Gearhart. It's filmed shot by shot after the original film, the only visible diffrence is the actors and language.

This is the first and only film I've ever had bad dreams after watching. Acting performances doesn't get any better than this. I can't get around the fact that one of the reasons it's so scary is because it's in german. Germans are scary!

Typecasting

We discussed how alot of actors get these typical typecastes, like somehow every role is the very same. Unfortunate (as we like to think of it) actors/actresses like these are:

Judy Dench - Her usual typecast is the powerbitch or the very equal portraited powerdyke.

Tim Roth - Mr. Roth is an extremely versitile actor, but especially in America he usually gets the part of the bad guy.

Hugh Grant - Especially after the hooker-sex-blowjob-scandal he often plays the sleazy, but lonely british guy.

John Malkovich - For some people it may be hard to see how this guy's not versitile, but again, in America he often plays the mean guy (or the artsy gayish guy).

And of course Bill Murray - The decadent casanova who seeks real love, himself, or simply the funny casanova guy.

And needless to say, actors like Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Sandra Bullock, but we're not aiming that low.
